"Yellow Boy"
Mixed Media, 21 x 30 cm
'Another supposed antithesis, that between colour and drawing is converted, the colour at times acting as a graphic element. This suggests the pivotal position of his work on paper. They are not 'sculptor's drawings' which resolve questions of form, even less are they 'preparatory studies'. They are a parallel activity, in which similar ideas to those in the sculptures go through many permutations for their own sake, in the course of which resolutions occur which nourish the sculpture: but I think the process works both ways.'
Euan McArthur, from James Castle
